From Draft Pick to Elite Two-Way Anchor: The Remarkable Rise
Selected 8th overall in the 2019 WNBA Draft out of Stanford, Alanna Smith spent her early professional seasons carving out a role as an energetic reserve with the Phoenix Mercury and Indiana Fever. Her major breakout campaign arrived in 2023 with the Chicago Sky, where expanded playing time unlocked her full versatility as a stretch-five capable of guarding multiple positions.
Her transition to the Minnesota Lynx under head coach Cheryl Reeve unlocked a new tier of consistency and high-level efficiency. Operating alongside All-Star forward Napheesa Collier, Smith transformed from an intriguing rotational asset into a foundational starter. Her ability to stretch defenses with her outside jump shot while simultaneously anchoring the backline on defense has restructured Minnesota's tactical options.
Inside the Numbers: Advanced Metrics and Defensive Impact
While traditional box scores highlight her balanced output, advanced metrics illustrate the full magnitude of Alanna Smith's footprint on the floor:
- Elite Rim Protection: Smith consistently ranks near the top of the league in block percentage, averaging nearly two blocks per game while maintaining disciplined positioning to avoid unnecessary fouls.
- Floor Spacing Efficiency: Knocking down nearly 39% of her three-point attempts, she forces opposing centers out of the paint, creating driving lanes for teammates.
- Defensive Rating Impact: Minnesota's overall team defensive efficiency spikes during her minutes, largely due to her swift lateral movement on pick-and-roll switches.
- Frontcourt Playmaking: Averaging over three assists per contest, Smith operates effectively out of high-post actions, identifying open shooters when opposing defenses collapse.
