Evolution of Mertens' Box: Strategic Splits and High-Stakes Mentorship
The trajectory of Elise Mertens' career has been significantly shaped by her coaching choices. Her long-standing partnership with Robbe Ceyssens initially elevated her into the upper echelon of women's tennis, securing her first major singles breakthroughs and establishing her as a world-class doubles competitor. Ceyssens provided tactical stability and a deep understanding of her athletic capabilities, serving as both mentor and strategist during her initial ascent.
Subsequent coaching additions, including stints with experienced tacticians such as Philippe Dehaes and specialized coaching support, brought distinct technical adjustments to her game. These adjustments focused primarily on increasing her first-serve velocity, refining baseline depth, and taking a more proactive stance on short balls. In a high-density WTA calendar, finding a coach capable of managing both singles ambition and elite doubles commitments remains a specialized challenge that Mertens and her team continuously optimize.
Tactical Refinement and On-Court Execution for the 2026 Season
Mertens' signature style relies on exceptional counter-punching, relentless court coverage, and seamless net transition skills honed through her doubles mastery. Throughout the 2026 season, her coaching structure has prioritized aggressive court positioning to shorten points and conserve physical energy during grueling tournament weeks.
Key tactical focus areas established by her coaching team include:
- Net Transition Acceleration: Capitalizing on her doubles instinct to finish points early at the net rather than engaging in prolonged baseline exchanges.
- First-Serve Reliability: Increasing target variation on serve to generate higher win percentages on first-serve points under pressure.
- Return-Position Adjustments: Standing closer to the baseline against second serves to dictate play immediately off the return.
- Load Management: Structuring daily practice blocks to prevent burnout while maintaining high match fitness for back-to-back singles and doubles scheduling.

Striking the balance between singles deep runs and maintaining top doubles rankings requires meticulous scouting and transparent communication within her corner.
As the hardcourt season reaches its climax in New York, the guidance from Mertens' box will be tested against the tour's hardest hitters. Maintaining composure under pressure and executing aggressive game plans remain the critical benchmarks as her team aims for deep second-week runs in major competition.
