Dominance in the Division: From Lightweight Supremacy to Championship Defense
Islam Makhachev has solidified his spot at the top of the UFC's pound-for-pound rankings through relentless grappling and increasingly sharp striking. Since capturing the 155-pound crown, Makhachev has consistently turned back elite opposition, including dominant victories over former champions and top-tier contenders.
Under the guidance of former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and head coach Javier Mendez, Makhachev’s combat Sambo foundation has proven almost impossible to crack. High-profile wins against Alexander Volkanovski, Charles Oliveira, and Dustin Poirier established his reign as one of the most authoritative in modern lightweight history.
Top contenders continue to jockey for position to challenge the Dagestani champion. Rematch narratives involving Arman Tsarukyan and fresh matchups against rising lightweight contenders maintain high fan interest for Makhachev's immediate schedule.

Two-Division Glory: The Hunt for Welterweight Gold in 2026 and Beyond
Makhachev has frequently expressed his ambition to conquer a second division and secure double-champion status before his career concludes. A jump to the 170-pound welterweight division offers compelling narrative arcs, potential champion-vs-champion super-fights, and a legacy-defining achievement.
Transitioning to welterweight presents unique physical challenges against larger, wrestling-heavy opponents. However, analysts point out that Makhachev’s frame and elite grappling make him a formidable threat to any athlete holding the 170-pound belt in 2026.
Whether Makhachev chooses to defend his 155-pound throne once more or step up to welterweight, his upcoming fight remains one of the most anticipated combat sports events of the year. Official venue and card announcements from UFC leadership are expected in the coming weeks.
