The Evolution of Star Wars Storytelling on the Big Screen
The journey of developing standalone feature films for legacy characters has seen significant turbulence within Lucasfilm over the past decade. Originally conceived as part of a planned anthology film series following the release of Rogue One and Solo, a standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi feature was heavily discussed and even drafted as a script by writer Stuart Beare before being shelved. The shifting priorities of the studio following box office recalibrations redirected the project into the six-episode streaming event directed by Deborah Chow.
Despite the pivot to television, the appetite for theatrical treatments of classic characters has not diminished. Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen have repeatedly expressed enthusiasm about revisiting their respective roles if the right script and narrative justification materialize. Industry observers note that Lucasfilm's current cinematic slate prioritizes broader era-spanning events, such as Dave Filoni's Mandoverse culmination film and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's New Jedi Order movie starring Daisy Ridley, leaving standalone legacy films in a holding pattern.
