The Genesis of an Eerie Masterpiece and Johansson's Bold Risk
Released during the height of her mainstream global stardom as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Black Widow, Under the Skin represented a massive professional gamble for Scarlett Johansson. Directed by visionary filmmaker Jonathan Glazer, the movie adapted Michel Faber’s satirical novel into a haunting, visual poem. Johansson plays an unnamed extraterrestrial entity disguised as a human woman who drives a transit van through Scotland, luring lonely men to a surreal, liquid abyss.
The production of the film is now legendary for its guerrilla filmmaking techniques. Glazer and his crew fitted Johansson's van with hidden cameras, allowing her to interact with real, unsuspecting members of the public in Glasgow. This blurred line between documentary-style realism and abstract science fiction created an unsettling atmosphere that CGI-heavy blockbusters simply cannot replicate. Johansson’s ability to convey profound existential dread and emerging human empathy with almost no dialogue cemented this role as one of the finest performances of her career.

Jonathan Glazer's Enduring Influence on Modern Cinema
The cultural footprint of Under the Skin has only grown heavier in 2026. Following Jonathan Glazer’s recent Academy Award success with The Zone of Interest, film scholars and audiences have flocked back to his earlier filmography, identifying Under the Skin as the crucial bridge in his thematic evolution. The film's stark visual grammar, particularly the black-void extraction sequences, has heavily influenced a generation of modern genre filmmakers.
Johansson’s career trajectory since the film’s release highlights her deliberate balance between massive commercial projects and high-concept indie art. Even as she explores new directorial and producing ventures in 2026, her work in Glazer's masterpiece remains a gold standard for how major Hollywood stars can leverage their platform to champion uncompromising, visionary art.
