The Tactical Evolution and Midfield Mastery at Groupama Stadium
When Olympique Lyonnais secured Thiago Mendes from Lille in July 2019 for a reported €22 million fee, expectations were sky-high. Tasked with replacing the outbound Tanguy Ndombele, Mendes quickly became the defensive heartbeat of the squad under various managerial regimes, including Rudi Garcia and Peter Bosz. His exceptional ability to break up opposition play and initiate transitions made him indispensable during domestic Ligue 1 campaigns.
Beyond his standard defensive midfield duties, Mendes proved his tactical utility by transitioning into a highly reliable center-back when squad depth was challenged. This versatility was key to Lyon’s deep European runs, most notably their historic march to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2020. Over his 143 appearances for Les Gones, Mendes solidified his reputation as a big-game player who thrived under intense defensive pressure.
